Who am I?

wyffels Thibault

My name is Thibault wyffels. I study at Sint-Barbaracollege and am conducting this research on medication for AD(H)D. I have AD(H)D myself and take 30 mg of Equasym retard twice daily. Like many medications, it comes with side effects, and it was precisely these experiences—combined with the ongoing debate about whether it is necessary to start medication at a young age—that inspired my research. I want to examine how the benefits of medication compare to the drawbacks.

I have been taking this medication for about eight years. It’s not always easy: some people receive their diagnosis late, while others refuse medication because of mood swings or other side effects. I understand these difficulties and aim, through my research, to shed light on the variety of experiences. Personally, I have confidence in my medication, but I am aware of the mixed opinions surrounding it. That is why I chose this topic for my study.

I am 17 years old and am enrolled in the Science & Mathematics STEAM program at Sint-Barbaracollege. My passions lie in neurology, oncology, psychiatry, cardiology, psychology, and related fields. I hope to become a neuro-oncologistin the future. I take this research very seriously: I want to contribute objective information to help better understand the dilemma surrounding AD(H)D medication.

My approach is neutral and thorough: I will systematically compare and objectively examine the effects of medication. I am conducting this research in collaboration with Groepspraktijk La Lys. We aim to make a difference in this current debate. In my study, I will consider the benefits and drawbacks of medication in areas such as sports and hobbies, rest, general well-being, mood, appetite, sleep, concentration, integration in school or work, social acceptance, endurance, requirements for optimal medication effectiveness, and the influence of other factors on concentration and functioning. Everything will be carefully documented to create the most complete picture possible.

I also personally experience challenges such as adjusting medication, sleep problems, changes in appetite, mild headaches, and mood swings. I will share my own experiences as well as tips from experts and the experiences of other patients.

My research targets a broad audience: from people who started medication later in life (ages 30–40), to those who began almost immediately after diagnosis, to those who have never taken medication. My goal is to help others—a dream I have always had. For this research, I need your help to create an honest and complete picture and to make my dream a reality. Together, we can support each other.
